VICE PRESIDENT FOR FINANCE, UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME
The University of Notre Dame invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Finance. The University is in a strong financial position and is in a fortunate standing relative to many of its peer institutions in American higher education. As its next Vice President, Notre Dame seeks an innovative, collaborative leader with an outstanding record of accomplishment in either higher education or in the business community. S/he will provide forward-thinking, creative and highly strategic leadership for a division that is central to the University’s ability to flourish. It is a tremendous opportunity for a leader motivated by the opportunity to have significant impact at the highest levels.
The Vice President will join an experienced senior leadership group at Notre Dame that is characterized by a team-oriented culture and a deep commitment to excellence and continued aspiration. The Vice President has a high level of engagement with the University’s executive officers as a member of the President’s Leadership Council. S/he is responsible for the planning, development, evaluation and implementation of the University’s financial functions. Through her/his team of direct reports, s/he provides the leadership of all budgets, capital planning, treasury management, procurement, real estate acquisitions and development, financial reporting and analysis, accounting and financial services. In addition, the Vice President’s team oversees research and sponsored programs accounting, tax, payroll, accounts payable, and ensures that the University conforms to the highest standards of accepted accounting principles. The Vice President also serves as the primary government liaison relative to financial issues.
The role of the Finance Division is to serve the University’s academic mission. The Vice President must be committed to furthering the deep and meaningful ties that the division has built with partners across the academic enterprise. A strong, collegial partnership with the Provost and other senior academic leaders will be critical to success in the role. The capacity to assess and respond to changing conditions will be crucial. It will be important that the Vice President possess superior financial planning and analytical skills, and an in-depth knowledge of budgeting, modeling, debt management, liquidity and strategic financial analysis, and that s/he apply these skills as a strategic problem-solver.
Notre Dame has been on an upward trajectory, characterized by bold initiatives and the investment of substantial resources. The Vice President must view her/himself as not only a careful steward of the University’s resources, but also as a strategic facilitator in the use of the University’s resources to achieve its bold aspirations. To capitalize on the myriad opportunities on the horizon for the University, candidates should have a demonstrated strategic outlook. Their leadership experience should evidence a strong capacity to foster a culture of innovation, to energize colleagues, and to embrace new ways to allocate and reallocate resources in the service of the University’s priorities and mission. The culture of the division is genuinely collegial. To be effective, the Vice President will have a collaborative leadership style that values open communication and encourages strategic thinking at every level of the organization. S/he should be an astute, skilled and genuine relationship builder and should have an empowering and respectful style -- s/he should truly embody the “servant-leader.”
