Search for the Vice President for Finance and Administration
Lawrence University, a nationally recognized liberal arts college and conservatory of music, seeks a strategic and innovative senior officer to lead its finance and administrative operations. The vice president for finance and administration (VPFA) will lead efforts to chart a financially sustainable future for the University. With the president, board of trustees, senior colleagues, faculty, and staff, the next VPFA will enhance administrative systems and structures in support of the University’s academic mission and strategic goals. Reporting to the president, the VPFA will oversee the areas of finance, human resources, information technology, facilities, campus services, and university counsel.
Building on significant financial gains in recent years and current momentum across the University, the VPFA will continue to lead the initiative to optimize revenues, deploy resources to the University’s highest priorities, and find cost-saving efficiencies. The VPFA will wisely steward assets, manage risk carefully, and provide vision for the financial future of the University. The successful candidate will be a finance and business operations strategist with transparent leadership and open communication styles that inspire confidence. Experience and core expertise in long range planning, financial forecasting and analysis, and business process improvements are essential. Lawrence’s new VPFA will oversee a broad portfolio of critical functions and services and will have the aptitude and appetite to develop the talents and support the success of the finance and administration team. The role requires a person who excels in a highly collaborative culture where dedication to mission, hard work, and recognition for accomplishments are shared across the leadership team.

Founded in 1847, Lawrence University traces its history to the early days of the uniquely American liberal arts tradition of educating students to be critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, able communicators, and involved citizens. Lawrence offers its 1450 students a quality of education that stands out among its peers. The combination of a nationally ranked liberal arts college and a first-tier conservatory of music ensures that students benefit from rigorous academics and quality arts education with an emphasis on individualized learning. Lawrence has one of the lowest student-faculty ratios in the nation at 8:1, and fully 60 percent of its courses offer one-on-one teaching. This provides the intensive faculty engagement that opens minds and changes lives. Small classes and a four-year residential requirement create a close-knit community where students live, study, and thrive in a climate of shared discovery and enrichment.
Only the second institution in America to be founded as a coeducational college, diversity and inclusion are core values of Lawrence. Current students come from 44 states and 38 countries, and 26 percent of the student body are US students of color. Diversity and inclusion are first-order priorities for the current administration, both to support educational goals and to reflect the changing demographic of US high school seniors. Lawrence created the position of vice president for diversity and inclusion as a direct report to the president in 2016, and with this colleague in the lead, the entire University leadership team works to create an equity-minded campus culture.
