The Department of Mechanical Engineering is a large academic and research department in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. It currently serves a student population comprised of nearly 1200 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students. Its faculty include over 40+ tenured and tenure track faculty, over 50 professional track faculty. Additionally, over 25 staff positions, both exempt and non-exempt support the department’s operations. The department is home to nearly forty laboratories and 5 research centers. In FY20, operating and research expenditures exceeded $30 million dollars. The Department has nearly 80,000 sq ft of offices and laboratories located across 5 buildings.
The Director of Operations serves as the lead staff position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This position manages all financial, administrative and personnel operations for the Department and its centers. In doing so, the Director oversees the business operations staff, which includes 5 direct reports and 9 secondary reports. Furthermore, this position is tasked with establishing and monitoring fiscal and operational controls, while monitoring their effectiveness and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, policies and regulations.
Bachelors degree. Masters Degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience. A minimum of 10–15 years experience in positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of finance, personnel, research grant and contracts management and 5 of those years must have been in Higher Education. Considerable experience in budget management and oversight.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • High level of proficiency with Microsoft word, excel and PowerPoint. • Excellent organizational skills and excellent record of maintaining positive interpersonal relationships. • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact. • Ability to anticipate and initiate action in support of the Chair and the faculty. • Ability to establish and monitor fiscal and operational controls. • Ability to learn and teach technological and analytical tools for business purposes. • Ability to create, maintain and monitor strong internal controls within all areas of responsibility
Masters Degree: Accounting, Finance or Business preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in using data base applications. • Kuali Financial Systems. BA3/BA4, and relevant tools to generate reports is strongly preferred. • Working knowledge of OMB circulars and pertinent guidance.
