Provides audit, compliance and consulting coverage among various USA Health and University of South Alabama entities; develops and maintains productive team-oriented client and staff relationships; demonstrates technical knowledge of Joint Commission Standards and medical terminology and knowledge of healthcare regulatory laws, regulations, and federal health care program requirements; researches medical topics to support, develop and/or modify comprehensive internal; audits programs for audit engagements; reviews medical record documentation including coding; assists in identifying and assessing risks via a periodic risk assessment; provides key input to development of the risk-based annual internal audit plan; leads or conducts performance, operational, financial and compliance healthcare audit engagements including conducting interviews, documenting client processes and procedures, researching standards, guidelines and criteria, performing audit tests and documenting results, identifying and defining issues, creating written reports of audit engagement results that are accurate, complete and easy to understand, and reviewing work for accuracy, completeness, quality and conformance to departmental policy and audit standards; utilizes internal audit software for all appropriate steps of the audit engagement process; completes peer review process; works to achieve engagement deadlines to ensure completion of the Annual Audit Plan; communicates or assists in communicating the results of audit or consulting projects to management and/or the Board of Trustees; resolves problems and mediates conflicts with engagement stakeholders; provides consulting services to the organization’s management and staff; completes external audit assist work as needed; maintains all organizational and professional ethical standards and ensures all internal audit activities carried out or supervised are in compliance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards); provides training and coaching to internal audit staff as well as feedback for staff development; contributes to the ongoing process of departmental improvement as part of the Quality Improvement and Assessment Process (QAIP); ability to work independently with latitude for initiative and independent judgment; ability to work on multiple projects across various entities simultaneously; pursues professional development opportunities; serves on organizational project teams or committees as needed; attends conferences that may require overnight and/or weekend stays; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the state of Alabama, or a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare field, business, accounting, or other related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and two years of professional nursing, healthcare compliance, quality control, billing/coding or related experience in a medical setting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or a directly related field is preferred. Knowledge of medical devices and/or the pharmaceutical industry is preferred. Professional audit experience is preferred. Certification as a CHIAP (Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional), CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CHC (Certified in Healthcare Compliance), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is preferred. Experience in Cerner or Athena healthcare software and audit software such as Pentana/MKInsight is preferred.
