BASIC FUNCTION:          

The Deputy Chief of Internal Audits works collaboratively with the Chief Audit and Compliance Officer to lead the University’s internal audit department.  The Deputy Chief serves as a proactive partner and trusted advisor for ensuring that the University’s initiatives are appropriately assessed and prioritized.  The Deputy Chief proactively mitigates risks that may have a significant impact on the achievement of the University’s objectives. The Deputy Chief promotes a culture of sound risk and compliance awareness through services provided.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:         

Manages staff of Auditors.  Formally plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these positions. 

NATURE AND SCOPE:    

Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, and staff within the University.

External contacts include government agencies, vendors, visitors, officials and the general public.

 PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:      

• Supervise audit teams in their performance of audits, including providing input to the planning, execution and reporting phases of the audits, reviewing work performed, working with business unit personnel to obtain management responses to recommendations and ensuring a value-added audit report is issued timely.
• Proactive and collaborative participation in the management of the Internal Audit Department, including the annual risk assessment, development of annual audit plan and audit programs, audit standards, and creation and delivery of presentations to the Audit Committee.
• Perform and manage ad-hoc audits, loss prevention initiatives, fraud investigations, process improvement initiatives and other projects as requested.
• Perform quarterly business monitoring by having discussions with stakeholders and by assessing P&L, operational loss events, self-identified issues, emerging regulations and risk exposure.
• Maintain ongoing dialog with key stakeholders regarding risks identified and necessary improvement to the control framework.
• Verify prompt and adequate resolution of issues raised by the University’s management, regulators and Internal Audit.
• Build effective working relationships across the University across 1st and 2nd line functions.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

• Experience interacting with department leaders, audit committees, boards of directors, external auditors, regulators and professional consulting firms.
• Experience managing audits related to financial origination and operations, BSA/AML, regulatory compliance, and University operations systems.
• Familiarity with advanced features of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Excel and Word).
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to work closely with staff auditors and periodically within tight time deadlines.
• Advanced knowledge of auditing standards and procedures, and appropriate accounting and auditing processes, rules and regulations.
• Proven ability to facilitate and reach consensus in committee structure with senior administration and with peers both internally and externally. 
• Demonstrated leadership ability with a proven record of success in communicating to and working with all levels of a rapidly changing organization. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• BA/BS degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance or similar field, with 5-10 years of relevant experience required.  
• 15 years of experience in auditing roles may be substituted in lieu of educational
• Master’s degree and at least 5 years of auditing experience preferred. 
• 5+ years in a senior leadership capacity.
• CIA, CPA or similar accounting or auditing professional certification.
