The Director of Business Services for University Housing will assume a strategic role in the overall management of financial, human resources, and project management in University Housing. As a key member of the University Housing Executive Team, the Director of Business Services for University Housing is responsible for leading, planning, managing and directing the business operations of University Housing including financial services, human resources/payroll and project management. University Housing serves 11,000 residents within 26 residence halls and three (3) apartment complexes within 3.75 million square feet of space. University Housing employs over 650 full-time and part-time staff and approximately 2000 student employees. University Housing is a self-supporting auxiliary enterprise with a budget of $125 million.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Organizational leadership – 40%
- Engage in and lead strategic planning for financial services, human resources, and project planning for University Housing.
- Serve as the chief financial officer for University Housing including, but not limited to budget planning; analysis and forecasting; rate development; strategic planning; capital planning, contract development and negotiations; financial reporting; operational and policy guidelines; external and internal audits; and procurement.
- Work closely with executive director in planning for the annual rate increase process through the Student Fee Advisory Committee, Student Affairs leadership, campus leadership, and the Board of Trustees.
- Maintain and further develop University Housing’s rate structure, funding projections, and other income generating proposals.
- Develop, implement, and facilitate the annual budget process and salary development activity in collaboration with University Housing unit leadership, ensuring that processes follow university guidelines.
- Develop strong relationships with the Executive Team. Serve as a strong strategic partner with other University Housing, Auxiliary Health & Wellbeing and Student Affairs units.
Unit Leadership – 40%
- Lead Business Services staff in providing strong customer service to seven (7) University Housing units, including over 650 employees and 2,000 student employees.
- Provide strategic direction for University Housing human resources group including, but not limited to, human resources; employment processes; labor and employee relations; staff training; and payroll.
- Provide oversight and direction for financial services group including, but not limited to, accurate distribution, processing, and reporting of income and expenses; reconciliation of monthly transactions and creation of financial statements; monitoring and projection of financial standing; and oversight of year-end close procedures.
- Provide oversight and direction for project management including, but not limited to, facilitating memorandums of understanding; the Long-Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFMP) process; and aiding ongoing departmental projects.
- Oversee purchasing and procurement processes for University Housing including business contract review in collaboration with University Purchasing and Contract Management Office and Illinois Public Higher Education Cooperative (IPHEC).
- Supervise, evaluate, and encourage professional development at all levels of staff in Business Services. Provide long-range employment planning and departmental succession planning.
- Engage and implement University Housing’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Collaboration and Compliance – 20%
- Develop and implement fiscal, business, and human resources policies and procedures within University guidelines and ensure University policy, state and federal regulations and laws, and other related policies are adhered to and consistently implemented.
- Collaborate with Student Affairs Technology Services to develop and implement technology tools and systems that provide critical financial and operational information for University Housing.
- Serve as a liaison for University Housing with campus units, including Campus Parking; Office of Business Services (OBFS); Office of Treasury Operations; Illinois Human Resources (IHR); University Purchasing; Illinois Public Higher Education Cooperative (IPHEC); Office of Access and Equity (OAE); University Audits; Auxiliary, Health & Wellbeing Finance Managers; other campus and University departments, and external vendors.
- Represent University Housing and Business Services on various department, Student Affairs and campus committees and work groups including but not limited to Illini Cash housing/food insecurity, Big Ten housing officers, etc.
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or another related field.
Preferred: A Master’s Degree in the same or related area. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification.
Experience:
Required: Ten or more years of senior-level experience in management in business services including responsibility for financial operations, strategic planning, supervision, and human resources.
Preferred: Experience working within University of Illinois system or other Illinois state university setting. A significant level of authority and responsibility in a college housing program at a major residential university.
