POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for a variety of accounting transactions in support of the CIIS Accounting & Control department, and Finance and Administration Division. The Accounting team's primary responsibility is to control and maintain the continuity, sustainability, and contingency financial objectives and strategic planning of CIIS. This team works collaboratively to support each other in a variety of department duties and responsibilities; thus, is cross-trained in each accounting postion. The incumbent will examine, analyze and interpret accounting records and conduct reconciliations of financial, accounts receivable, and students accounts data. This position will also support the financial processes of other units, such as with the Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and other departments that generate accounts receivables, and assist in general ledger, and payroll and benefits duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs general accrual accounting and other related duties.
- Processes all accounts receivables on a timely basis
- Audits and reconciles accounts receivables to the general ledger
- Monitors student account balances and interacts with the Office of Student Accounts, the Office of Financial Aid, and the Registrar to ensure the proper credits and refund requests are applied and processed in a timely manner while adhering to federal rules and regulations
- Cross-trains in other Accounting and Control department areas
- Manages recurring revenue and department revenue allocations
- Prepares general ledger entries, for Controller approval, by analyzing and reconciling a variety of accounts, and research transactions
- Coordinates payments and refunds related to Student Accounts and Financial Aid
- Generates and audits 1098Ts on a timely basis
- Provides the Controller with various reports and analysis
- Assists with the annual audits as required
- Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, as assigned
- Regularly reviews and update accounting policies and procedures
- Duties include interaction with vendors, staff, faculty, and students
- Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
- Files tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Marked Knowledge of general financial accounting and accrual accounting.
- Understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Proficient with Accounting General Ledger software, Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Highly proficient in Excel.
- Must be kind, intelligent, and proactive
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, or finance.
- At least three years of finance, accounting, or related experience required.
- Ability to learn enterprise database systems quickly.
- Experience with Ellucian Colleague highly desirable.
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other department members and CIIS departments.
- Must be detail oriented and highly organized with time and data.
- Working to advance toward Accounting Masters Degree or additional Accounting certification, preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Working Conditions -- Duties are primarily performed in an office environment at a desk or computer terminal, typically, Monday through Friday.
