
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Hospital Internal Audit is responsible for execution of the internal audit process and the associated results, providing guidance for staff as appropriate, delivering a high quality product, and communicating to the Director of Hospital Internal Audit. As an internal auditor for assigned projects, the incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining favorable working relationships with Management and others in order to create a good understanding of the Internal Audit function and its services. Overseeing internal audit staff projects including complex system-wide efforts, ensuring appropriate documentation to support work performed, and communicating conclusions. Provide recommendations to Management in support of achieving their business objectives.
Duties of an Assistant Director of Hospital Internal Audit may include the following but are not limited to:
- Ensures audits are conducted in accordance with the Institute of Internal Auditor's (IIA's) International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
- Independently conducts audits and other internal audit projects of varying degrees of difficulty and complexity.
- Serves as a model, mentor, and motivator for employees.
- Demonstrates professional conduct and adherence to Hospital Policies and Procedures.
- Performs ongoing planning functions to meet performance targets and improve operations.
- Prepares written reports and correspondence in support of Internal Audit initiatives as directed by the Director of Hospital Internal Audit.
- Oversees work product of internal audit staff and projects to ensure that internal audit project objectives are achieved, quality is assured, and staff is developed.
- Educates Hospital personnel and staff on Internal Controls and the Hospital's Internal Control Assessment Program.
- Validates Hospital areas' internal control self-assessment surveys.
- Provides guidance and technical direction to other internal audit staff.
- Provides input on performance of internal audit staff.
- Seeks ongoing training to gain additional expertise in healthcare auditing and professional standards.
- Attends team meetings, phone conferences, and training as needed.
- Assists with performing annual risk assessments.
- Assists with developing and monitoring progress on the completion of the annual internal audit work plan.
- Participates in Compliance and Ethics Week events.
- Presents on the Hospital's Internal Control Program for new employee orientation, with members of Management, and others as needed.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Five years of experience in healthcare.
- Three years of experience in internal audit or public accounting.
- One year of experience overseeing work product of other internal audit staff.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal, critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Working knowledge of the IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing and demonstrable experience with electronic audit work paper tools and techniques (e.g., TeamMate AM). Experience with data analysis software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or other advanced degree (e.g., Juris Doctor).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional Certification (CHIAP) or equivalent.
- Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or other related certifications.
- Three years of experience overseeing work product of other internal audit staff.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes "continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19," Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol, including booster vaccines. - Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*

- Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
