The Director, Internal Audit provides strategic leadership of Wright State University's internal audit function which serves as an independent assurance and advisory activity of the institution's risk, governance, and control processes. This position designs, develops, and implements internal audit policy and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and laws and within the context of maintaining a comprehensive enterprise risk management program.
Through performance and reporting of audit, investigative, and consultative engagements, this position serves as an advisor to mid- to executive-level management and as a liaison to the University Board of Trustees on addressing key risk exposures. This position also supports the Compliance and Risk functions through audit, consulting, and monitoring work or through training and advising on methods and techniques to perform those functions.
Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Accounting, Business, or other control related field and minimum of six years of professional auditing, compliance, or related oversight roles reviewing, identifying, or performing control related activities OR Master's degree with a concentration in Accounting, Business or other control related field and minimum of four years of professional auditing or compliance experience.
Possess effective technical writing and oral communication skills to clearly document the nature, timing, extent, and results of audit procedures.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Be able to work successfully both independently and in teams.
Ability to quickly develop and manage professional relationships in a decentralized environment
Professional certification in at least one of the following: CIA, CPA, CMA, CFE, CISA or equivalent.
Auditing experience across multiple industries.
Working knowledge of enterprise risk management.
Five or more years of progressively-responsible supervisory or managerial experience.
Essential Functions and percent of time::
10% – Alongside Compliance and Risk, assist in the development and management of the ongoing enterprise risk assessment to maintain a dynamic list of key risks to ensure the appropriate risks are being focused on through the year.
20% – Using the results of the enterprise risk assessment and other information sources, coordinate and execute annual audit plan to conduct independent and objective audit and consulting engagements to mitigate risk exposure and improve operational efficiency. Utilize best practice tools and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and university policies. Apply internal control concepts in a wide variety of university settings and appropriately assess the exposures resulting from ineffective or missing control practices.
60% – Develop, perform or assist with the preparation of plans for financial, operational, and compliance audits. Conduct analyses, meet with university personnel, examine documents and records to execute plans, and accurately interpret audit results against defined criteria including compliance with applicable federal, state, and university laws, regulations, and policies. Report on any exceptions identified to management, and track and follow-up to ensure appropriate mitigation actions have been taken and have succeeded in mitigating the risk.
5% – Report results of audits, consulting, monitoring, and other assignments to executive management and Board of Trustees, ensuring focus on key risks and the mitigation actions and status of any identified issues.
5% – Participate on assigned or requested projects. Provide control advice upon request as it relates to policy or operational changes. Assist other Departments, including but not limited to, General Counsel, in performing reviews or interpretations of auditing related activities. Other duties as assigned.
