Successful candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or economics and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience. Relevant work experience to include auditing or preparing financial statements for entities with annual revenue of $250 million or more.
Responsibilities include:
Assist the Assistant Controller in the planning and execution of the University’s financial reporting activities. Creates ad hoc financial reports, surveys, and interim reports, as well as any other special reporting needed. Assists with University policy changes relative to financial reporting.
Serves as a major contributor to the overall preparation and management of the financial statements (annual and interim), including consolidating the component units, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards (GASB) which includes the preparation of annual financial reports, the review of the notes, schedules, and final financial statements as directed by University Controller. Coordinates the preparation of other schedules and closing entries. Ensures compliance with applicable statutes and regulatory requirements. Maintains current reporting guidelines issued by the State and adheres to these guidelines in University reporting.
Provides appropriate and meaningful financial information, analysis, metrics, and responses as required. Assists with the annual Financial Close Process and Statutory audit. Reviews and analyzes actual financial results and explanation of variances from budget and comparative results.
Assists the Assistant Controller in researching and implementing new Accounting Standards and resolving technical accounting and tax issues. Provides assistance in streamlining accounting processes in areas such as capital projects and associated debt, reconciliations, Unexpended Plant Funds, Renewal & Replacement Funds, Retirement of Indebtedness Funds, and Investment in Plant Funds.
Support the Asst. Controller-Financial Reporting, as needed, on various cost accounting reports such as the annual fringe benefit rate calculation, periodic Facilities and Administration rate calculations as well as university cost allocations to Auxiliary enterprises etc. Assists University Controller in the cash management process.
Support the Asst Controller, Financial Reporting, as needed in managing the stale dated check process and submission to the State. Assists in managing the University fixed assets and inventory controls and confirmations and Financial Responsibility confirmations. Responsible for the financial statement projection initiative using Synario software.
Serves as financial liaison to various University partnerships, foundations, and associated organizations (i.e. Wilson Hotel, Herff Trust, U of M Foundation, etc.) Provides review and financial analyses of these entities.
