East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Controller! Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. As the Controller, you will need to think creatively and be comfortable interacting widely across the campus. You will be an active member of the Business Office team and will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer to administer, operate and direct the University’s Accounting and Student Accounts operations. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your business acumen and leadership experience while overseeing a direct staff of seven. To be successful in this role, you must be self-motivated and a highly detail-oriented problem solver with strong analytical skills
Your normal hours will be Monday through Friday 8 am – 4:30 pm, but you may have to flex your schedule from time to time based on the needs of the business to be a true Controller. Some travel is required to attend system-wide meetings and for professional development. When our team shows up for work, they are energized and motivated to succeed - all while being the most crucial piece to keeping the ESU operations humming.
Provide leadership and oversight of all accounting and student account functions: general ledger; grant, fixed asset, cash, inventory, student loan, and project accounting; accounts payable; student and miscellaneous accounts receivable.
Oversee the accounting and financial reporting support provided to University Properties, Inc. and the Center for Research and Economic Development and serve as financial liaison to all affiliated organizations of the University
Serve as liaison to all auditors including external auditors and internal auditors, Pennsylvania Auditor General, Pennsylvania Department of Treasury. This includes oversight of the University’s annual financial statement audit; A133; internal audits and reviews; and NCAA Agreed Upon Procedures. Coordinate management responses and corrective actions to audit reports and findings working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, as well as Technology and other staff.
Maintain a system of internal control to ensure all fiscal operations comply with Commonwealth, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Board of Governors, and federal policies, laws and regulations
Coordinate accounting, student accounts, and reporting systems with Information Technology staff, including providing functional support of system implementation and testing
Oversee the development and preparation of monthly and annual financial reports including FINRPT and Dashboards
Lead the staff of the Accounting and Student Accounts Offices recommending selection, retention, promotion and discharge as appropriate. Identify and implement professional development opportunities for staff; train staff on new accounting procedures and accounting system enhancements.
Review and make recommendations for new and/or revised policies related to university finances and student accounts
Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, administrators, other institutional peers and non-campus customers to build consensus, explain financial and related information, resolve issues and ensure positive public relations with stakeholders;
Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.

What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Active Certified Public Accountant license
Seven or more years of experience with increasing levels of responsibilities in accounting
Five or more years of full charge supervisory experience, preferably in a higher education, unionized environment
Advanced skills in developing internal controls and accounting and business policies and procedures
Strong IT skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Excellent leadership skills with a management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, trust and patience
Professionalism, sensitivity, and discretion in handling confidential information
Ability to deliver quality work on tight deadlines, with strong organizational and priority setting skills
High level of independent judgment, discretion, and business acumen
Excellent oral and written skills and excellent use of grammar and composition; the ability to communicate comfortably with staff, students, colleagues, and external constituents
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in accounting, finance or business related field.
Knowledge of governmental/fund accounting
Prior experience in higher education
Experience using Banner Student Information System
Experience with grants accounting and federal indirect cost recovery
Experience using relational databases such as SAP and Banner
Experience with A-133/single audit
