Provides analytical support for more complex budget projects. Prepares operational budgets for departments. Recommends changes to systems and procedures to ensure conformance with budgetary provisions.
This position is responsible for all financial aspects of the Memorial Union business and program operations including the Memorial Union Business Office and its staff. The position serve a the chief accountant and is responsible for facilitating department-wide understanding and adherence to financial policies, procedures, requirements and deadlines via regular and sustained outreach to employees.
This position functions at both an administrative policy level in preparing the annual operating budgets and in developing financial models pertaining to new and anticipated University initiatives and at a hands-on level in monitoring and overseeing daily budgetary activity.
Example of Duties • Provides analytical support for the more complex budget projects. • Works directly with major department managers. • Estimates profits and losses and recommends ways to save money. • Consults with units or departments regarding budget analysis, financial reports, reconciliations, irregular and unusual transactions and problem resolutions. • Consults with units or departments and/or coordinates the preparation of operating budgets based on actual performance, previous budget figures, estimated revenue, expense reports and other factors. • Compares departmental expenditures with budget allocations to analyze budgets and recommend approval or disapproval to management.
Level Guidelines • Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals • Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude • Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action • Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices • Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff • May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team) • May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist • Provides guidance to students
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in accounting, finance, business
Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial accountability.
Expertise in developing complex spreadsheets and using databases.
Familiarity with fund accounting in a higher education, governmental, or non-profit organization setting including the funding sources and restrictions.
Knowledge of enterprise resource planning systems, such as Workday.
